Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Co-op?
A Co-op is essentially a community within a community. The principle is people helping each other and each member having an equal vote. There are many committees at HOPE Co-op that will help you become a more involved member such as;
Where are we located?
We are located at 681 Hope Circle in Newmarket Ontario. The closest major intersection is Mulock Drive and Sandford Street.
Can we see a unit?
As we get many applicants for our units, it is not viable for us to show the units to applicants. The basic layout of the unit can be seen on this website at link or we have a brochure that you can ask for at the Co-op office located at 681 Hope Circle. Once an applicant is interviewed by the Membership Selection Committee and approved, you can then schedule an appointment with the Co-op office to view a unit.
How do I apply?
The first step is to download an application from this site, or come in to the office during office hours and get an application. The application has various requirements that must be complied with prior to your application being processed. Applications must be complete before they can be considered.
  1. Proof of Citizenship (copy of birth certificate, landed immigrant status, etc.) for each person on the application.
  2. Proof of income (copy of pay stubs for 8 consecutive weeks, employment letter, ODSP or Social Assistance) for each adult applicant.
  3. Landlord contact information.
How do I get involved?
One of the requirements of membership is that all members participate in co-op activities. You can do this by;
Is it government or subsidized housing?
H.O.P.E. Co-operative Housing is a blend of Market and Rent-Geared-to-Income housing. If subsidy is available, it is offered internally to our members first (as opposed to the Provincial centralized waiting lists). There is a minimum residency requirement of one year prior to members being able to apply to our internal wait list. Once the residency requirement is fulfilled members can drop by the office and fill out the paperwork to get added to the list. Subsidy will be offered as it becomes available on a first-come, first-served basis to those members who qualify. We currently have no subsidy available.
Are there schools, hospitals, etc. close by?
Newmarket is a thriving community with a variety of schools (both public and private), community services, shopping, entertainment and a hospital close by. We are also close to Hwys 400 and 404.

What do I have to do once approved for membership?
Once you have been approved for membership, the Co-op office will contact you to offer you the unit. You may arrange for an appointment to view the unit at this time. At this point, you will sign an Occupancy Agreement and provide first month's housing charge and a maintainance deposit equivalent to the first month's housing charge in the form of a certified cheque or money order. (For example: if you are in line for a three-bedroom unit you would be required to submit $1151 x 2 = $2302) to secure a unit. This deposit does not qualify as last month's housing charge, but is to be used if there is any damage or utility arrears on move out. Once a post move-out inspection has been conducted and the vacating members provides proof of no utility arrears, a move-out refund will be issued.
Are there any other charges?
There is a $50/pet deposit that you must pay at the time that the Occupancy Agreement is signed.
Are pets allowed?
Only common domestic pets are allowed in the co-op. Please note that each household may ONLY choose one of the following:
Are washer & dryers included?
The units do have a "rough-in" for a washer and dryer and you may provide your own. The Co-op also has washer and dryer facilities on-site which charge $1.00/load.
